American actor Black, 53, has starred in movies like King Kong, Shallow Hal, and School of Rock.

The actor is well-known for his acting skills, but he is also the lead singer of the comedic rock band Tenacious D.

Most Black fans are aware of these facts, but fewer are aware that Black’s real name isn’t Jack Black.

Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen, two satellite engineers, gave birth to The Holiday star in the summer of 1969.

Thomas Jacob Black was given the name by the couple.

The actor eventually came up with the nickname “Jack,” which is a shortened version of his middle name, Jacob.

He later adopted the name Jack Black because, let’s face it, it has a better ring to it.

Yet Black is not the first famous person to have done so in order to pursue a career in Hollywood.

The 55-year-old Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx was born Eric Marlon Bishop, but he changed his name to something more gender ambiguous 

During his stand-up days, the Django Unchained star reportedly decided to go with a more feminine name because female comedians were frequently called to the stage first.

He reportedly chose the name “Foxx” in honour of Redd Foxx from Sanford and Son.

Whoopi Goldberg, 67, the actress of Sister Act, was actually born Caryn Elaine Johnson.

In an interview with The New York Times, Goldberg disclosed that a whoopee cushion served as the source of her name’s origin.

She told the publication: “If you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So people used to say to me, ‘You’re like a whoopee cushion’. And that’s where the name came from.”

Goldberg is the star’s mother’s maiden name, and she chose to use it in the hopes of being taken more seriously.

In a chat with The Jewish Chronicle, she said: “My mother did not name me Whoopi, but Goldberg is my name, it’s part of my family, part of my heritage. Just like being Black.”

And singer John Legend was born Born John Roger Stephen.

Chatting to MTV, the ‘All of Me’ singer revealed that his stage name comes from a childhood nickname that stuck.

“John Legend is a nickname that some friends started calling me, and it kind of grew into my stage name,” he said (via People magazine).

“It grew to the point where more people in my circle would know me by that name than by my real name.”
