Victoria’s Secret Introduces Its First Model With Down Syndrome

A Puerto Rican model named Sofia Jirau made history by becoming the first person with Down syndrome to appear in a Victoria’s Secret advertisement.

Chromosome 21 is an extra copy, which results in the genetic disorder known as Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is characterised by physical and intellectual challenges, and people with it frequently have distinctive face features and potential health issues.

Jirau is currently one of 18 diverse ladies from various backgrounds that are a part of the Victoria’s Secret ‘Love Cloud’ collection.

The 27-year-old shared her excitement on Instagram and thanked everyone for their support, saying that her dreams had come true.

She wrote: “One day I dreamed it, I worked for it and today it is a dream come true.

“Finally I can tell you my big secret… I am the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down syndrome!

“Thanks to all of you for always supporting me in my projects. Thanks to @victoriassecret for seeing in me a #WithoutLimits model and making me part of the Love Cloud Collection inclusion campaign.

“This is just the beginning, now it really took shape! Inside and out there are no limits.”

Jirau takes pride in being one of the few models with Down syndrome to take part in such a significant fashion event. She made her modelling debut at New York Fashion Week in 2020.

She also wants to meet Jennifer Lopez, a fashion star who she admires for both her music and sense of style.

Jirau told People: “I want to meet Jennifer Lopez. I like how she dresses and how she is. I love all of her clothes.

“I love her songs, her CDs, her photos. Everything.”

Jirau is the second Puerto Rican model to appear in the Victoria’s Secret campaign, making her involvement an important milestone.

She also owns and operates her own online store named Alavett, which adds to her long list of achievements.

She said: “The most important thing about fulfilling my dreams is to show people around the world that there are no limits and inspire them to fight for their own dreams.

“This is why I always say ‘inside and outside there are no limits’ to motivate people to break with the limitations that they self-impose.”

Victoria’s Secret views the Love Cloud campaign as a significant step in its ongoing rebranding attempt to appeal to a wider spectrum of women.

Raul Martinez, the company’s new lead creative director, emphasises inclusivity and an empowering mentality throughout the campaign, which is in line with the new ideals Victoria’s Secret is working to promote.
