Carmine, also known as cochineal extract or natural red 4, is a pigment obtained from the crushed bodies of female cochineal insects. These insects are native to South and Central America and have been used for centuries to produce a vibrant red or pink color. Carmine is commonly used as a natural dye in a variety of consumer products which includes cosmetics, textiles, and within foods.

Carmine is used by many retailers to create foods and is classed as a ‘natural colouring/additive’ however for obvious reasons it can’t be eaten by vegans.
