Hormel Foods, a food company with its headquarters in Minnesota, introduced the beef product in tins for the first time in 1937.
SPAM is actually just a combination of pork, water, salt, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrate, despite being marketed as a ‘mystery meat’.

The product’s alleged target market was housewives who desired inexpensive, quick meals that didn’t necessarily require much preparation time.
Customers were hesitant to eat meat that didn’t need to be refrigerated, thus it first had trouble gaining traction.
Surprisingly, it had a huge increase in popularity during World War II as a result of the challenges in getting fresh meat to the troops.

By the conclusion of the conflict, the military had spent more than 150 million pounds on it!
SPAM was brought to Pacific islands including Guam, Hawaii, Okinawa, and the Philippines during World War II, and they liked it!
But while some people absolutely LOVE it there are many people who can’t stand the product and actively avoid it! But whether you’re a lover or a fighter of SPAM there’s one question that puzzles everyone…what does SPAM mean?
The name is actually a portmanteau (which means blended word) of spiced ham.
Spiced + Ham = SPAM
