Ever questioned the use of the little pocket in your jeans? Now the internet has finally found an answer.

Now we don’t mean the normal-sized pockets suitable for your phone and spare change, but rather the small, tucked-in pockets that are only present on one side. Why are they so small? What are they for?

You would think that it’s only a fashion statement, but surprisingly, it has much more historical importance. Those tiny pockets date all the way back to 1890, when Levi’s ‘waist overall’ pants first included them.

Their original purpose was to fasten pocket timepieces, but as they lost popularity, their use changed. It was also said to serve cowboys who used it back then to keep their pocket watches secure when riding horses across the tough terrain.

The requirement for a specific “pocket” to house timepieces has been rendered redundant by the invention of wristwatches and other timekeeping devices. These tiny compartments have changed their functions and responsibilities as a result with some uses very surprising!

Over time this pouch has become versatile and has acquired many names including a ticket pocket, coint pocket, match pocket, frontier pocket and even….a condom pocket! If it fits….then why not?
