Experts Advise Brits On The “Exact Date” to Switch On Their Heating

Who knows what will happen at this point, but it appears to be the end of summer already. I mean, at this point, that assertion sounds repetitive.

But there is no doubting that the temperature is dropping. The battle over when to turn on the heating is about to begin, as we all know.

There will always be that one housemate who turns it on the moment they notice a breeze in the warm air. Then there’s the flatmate who won’t even consider turning on the light until you can all see your breath and shiver yourself to sleep.

On the precise day we should be doing it, though, some heating experts have now weighed in.

They provided advice on how long we should wait before cranking on the heat using Met Office data from the previous five years.

When the outdoor temperature falls below 15°C, the NHS suggests turning on your heating to at least 18°C.

It is not anticipated that temperatures would rise above 15°C after this date. But it’s important to keep in mind how erratic the British weather can be.

They predict that if we continue to experience warm weeks in autumn, we might avoid turning it on until 2 November.

Although there isn’t a perfect moment to turn on the heat, research from BestHeating’s Jess Steele indicates that as the temperature drops below 15°C, usually in the middle of October, it is better to do so because we feel the cold more.

Even the hardiest among us will have their heating on by the end of the month to stay warm because more temperature drops are anticipated.

Additionally, Jess offered some tips for save money when turning on the heat.

“The average thermostat setting in the UK is 20.8°C, but 18°C should keep you warm enough during the colder months,” she stated. This can result in a fuel cost savings of up to 10%, or roughly £80.

Turning the thermostat down by one degree Celsius and observing how you feel is a clever approach to determine if the heating is too warm.

The expert also suggested not wasting energy when you weren’t at home by heating only the rooms that were actually being used.

Now it’s only up to you to choose whether to heed this advice, switch it on the moment you have to don a hoodie, or wait until everyone in the house is arguing over it.

Have you ever wondered why your sink is underneath the window when you’re doing the dishes?

UK-based homeowner thought of this very thing when visiting Reddit.

She penned: “Planning a kitchen renovation, and realised we can easily move the kitchen sink away from the window to give us more usable counter space.”

“Then I realised, I’ve never seen a kitchen sink that isn’t in front of a window.”

She continued by asking whether there was a specific explanation, and soon the comments section was overrun with responses.

A professional at KDCUK explained: “The simple reason why kitchen sinks have traditionally been placed under the window is that the window is, obviously, on an outside wall.”

“In terms of plumbing, using as short a waste pipe as possible from the sink to the drains is not only the most effective but also the cheapest, solution.”

They added: “It’s also because it’s where the most natural light comes through. Plus if you wash by hand plates dry quicker. This is a hang over before the dishwasher.”

The appreciative woman responded: “Makes perfect sense. Thankfully, the opposite end of the kitchen also has drains and plumbing, just no windows.”

And the sink revelation blew people’s minds…

“Woaahh that’s crazy! Thanks for sharing that,” wrote one.

A second commented: “Lol omg I always thought it was so housewives could send the kids out to play and watch them while she washed up!

Idk why I though that though, nobody has ever said that to me now that I think about it.”

Meanwhile, a third added: “Never occurred to me but now I am visualising everyone I know and there sink.”
