American Idol is back for it’s 21st season on ABC and once again Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are on the hunt for the next big star in music on the singing competition show!

However after the most recent episode’s auditions there is one in particular that has caused some controversy after many have criticised the way that Perry gave feedback on a contestants performance.
Having been running for 20 seasons already people by now know the set up of American Idol which after getting through your initial audition you then make it to a follow up audition in Hollywood – hence the catchphrase ‘You’re going to Hollywood!’
During these auditions is when contestants get to perform for the very first time and provide the judges with enthusiasm, their talent and reasons for wanting to enter and win the competition. The contestant in question that came under Perry’s harsh criticism was 25 year old Sara Beth Liebe a mother of 3.

By revealing her age, the 25-year-old surprised Perry and said, “Bless, you guys are my favourite. I have three kids. If Katy lays on the table I think I’m going to pass out.”
Perry then retorted, “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much,” with many viewers calling out this comment and accusing her of mom shaming the auditionee.
When Liebe admitted that being a mother had left her with little time for herself and that she was trying singing for the first time outside of karaoke and church choir, the “California Gurls” singer continued by asking if singing was her dream.
Perry advised Liebe to quit if her desire wasn’t being fulfilled because “there’s a lot of dreams behind you”.

“You Know I’m No Good” was what Liebe initially sang before Perry said “that’s not enough” and told her to try ‘Benny and the Jets’ which she offered her advice through urging her ‘More of that!’
After the performance Katy told Sara “I also respect everyone who’s walking through that door who will lay down their life for this golden ticket. You’re in the dream now, go get your golden ticket. Hurry before the dream ends”
Many people took to social media to say they found the audition uneasy to watch and have called her out for being too hard on the mum of three who was visibly nervous throughout. Katy Perry IS paid to be on the show as a judge BUT did she take her role one step too far or was she giving this contestant the advice she needs to succeed in the competition?
