Irish Singer Sinéad O’Connor Dies Aged Just 56

Sinéad O’Connor the musician and activist from Ireland has passed away at the age of 56.

The singer’s family released the following statement:

‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.’

She was best known for the 1990 single Nothing Compares 2 U, which peaked at number one on the international charts which sported a beautiful music video that became iconic with the singer.

Leo Varadkar, the Taoiseach (Irish PM), paid homage to her, stating that her music was ‘loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare’

The vocalist, who was outspoken about her social and political beliefs, put out a total of 10 studio albums.

‘The Lion and the Cobra’ O’Connor’s debut album, debuted in the US and UK top 40 in 1987, and her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, featured her well-known song “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

This song, which was written by Prince, peaked at number one in several countries, including the US and the UK.

Shane, the 17-year-old son of the Dublin singer, passed only a few days after he went missing last year. Speaking about his passing the singer wrote on her social media ‘decided to end his earthly struggle” and asked that “no-one follows his example.”

After converting to Islam in 2018, she adopted the name Shuhada but kept using her original name while performing.

One of her most memorable performances was in 1992 on the US television programme Saturday Night Live, where she was a guest artist and tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II.

She said “fight the real enemy” to the camera after an acapella rendition of Bob Marley’s War in an apparent attack on the Catholic Church.
