The enthusiasm around Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie news and updates became evident after Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 demonstrated that Paramount could be trusted to deliver Sega’s blue speedster to live-action. One of the most well-known video game series in history is Sonic, whose titular blue hedgehog rivals Mario in terms of popularity.

Despite a few early missteps like the “Ugly Sonic” fiasco, Paramount has built Sonic a profitable cinematic world that has gotten both positive critical and commercial reception. A successful sequel and the announcement that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 would indeed be released came after this.

After its premiere in February 2020 to mostly positive reviews, Sonic the Hedgehog went on to become the most successful video game film adaptation ever in North America. Due to the popularity, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was produced quickly and launched in April 2022.

In the sequel, Sonic and Tails work together to defeat Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles, the new sidekick. After that movie’s debut, which received significantly better reviews from critics and viewers, rumours regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 3 started to circulate. The most recent Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie updates indicate that there is still much more of the world to discover from the video game source material.

Updates for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film were somewhat slow until 2023, when the new Sonic film’s development and marketing picked up. The most recent information regarding Sonic 3 was provided by franchise writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who confirmed progress on the next Sonic the Hedgehog sequel but avoided providing any specifics about the type of plot they are crafting.

The writing team informed supporters that the movie was “looking good” and that they should start getting excited about it, despite the lack of any concrete confirmations. It appears that the third installment in the franchise will continue this trend of the movies expanding in scale and scope, since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 definitely broadened the scope of the film and opted for a greater adventure.

A Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was announced months before the second film’s premiere. There was also the news that a Knuckles spinoff television show will be produced, so the sequel announcement was not the only one. The early announcement of a third movie was a wise decision because it was clear that the company had great confidence in the second film’s success, which it turned out to be.

It also makes sense that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is progressing even with the second movie still fresh in fans’ thoughts given the rapid turnaround between the first two films. Another huge hint came from the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 end credits scene, which hinted at the arrival of one of Sonic’s most popular pallette-swapped rivals — Shadow.

The third installment of Sonic the Hedgehog will debut on December 20, 2024. Although the previous two films were a hit when they were released in the first quarter of 2020 and 2022, respectively, it appears that the studio has more faith in the franchise now that the third film will be released during the holiday season.

The new change in Disney release schedules means Sonic will now compete with Thunderbolts from the MCU for the box office crown rather than the Avatar 3 sequel, which earlier faced strong competition due to its scheduled release on the same day.

Although there haven’t been any fresh Sonic the Hedgehog movie updates regarding the cast, many of the franchise’s recognisable faces will probably return. Sonic the Hedgehog’s voice actor, Ben Schwartz, will reprise his role as in the first two films.

Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna and Colleen O’Shaughnessy as Miles “Tails” Prower will join him to complete the legendary three. It is anticipated that Tika Sumpter and James Marsden will reprise their roles as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Sonic’s human family.

Given that Jim Carrey states he is retiring from acting and that he played Dr. Robotnik in the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films, it is unknown if he will return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, Jason Schwartz recently expressed his hope for Carrey to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Even if Carrey decides not to come back, the filmmakers have stated that his part won’t be replaced. Wade Whipple, the deputy sheriff of Green Hills, played by Adam Pally, and Rachel, Maddie’s sister, played by Natasha Rothwell, are both likely to make a comeback.

Given his function as Robotnik’s assistant, it is currently unknown if Lee Majdoub’s Agent Stone will make a comeback.

There haven’t been any plot updates for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 offered some suggestions for what might happen next. The concept of Super Sonic, which is Sonic supercharged by the Chaos Emeralds in the game, was presented at the end of the movie and might be expanded upon in the third one.

Additionally, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promised to offer an adventure with all three characters together from the outset. The movie ended with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles united as a trio.

One of the more well-known video game characters, Shadow the Hedgehog, was first presented in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s mid-credits scene. As a result, Shadow is anticipated to serve as Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s primary enemy.

The debut of Shadow also paves the way for the future appearance of additional video game characters, such Rouge the Bat, another antihero and Shadow’s longstanding gaming partner. The scenario also implies that Agent Stone, Robotnik’s henchman, managed to flee while the military believed he had perished.

Since filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has not yet started, no trailer has been made available. Given that the film won’t be released until December 2024, it’s probable that the first footage won’t be shown until the middle of that year (along with a sneak peek at some of the additional Sonic characters it might feature from the games in addition to Shadow).
