Mamma Mia! began its life on stage with a touching story written by Catherine Johnson and supported by sing-along songs from the ABBA’s huge catalogue. Since then, it has developed into a genuinely worldwide musical sensation with fans asking whether there will be a third film in the series after the success of the original movie adaptation and it’s sequel… and we have excellent news!
‘MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 3’ IS IN PRODUCTION
Judy Craymer, who developed Mamma Mia! and produced the films, has hinted that Mamma Mia 3 is extremely likely to happen even if it hasn’t been officially announced.

She recently told Deadline ‘It’s in its earliest stages. I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there. There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back – and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.’
Undoubtedly, this isn’t the first time a threequel has been mentioned by the creators of the previous two films. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again director Ol Parker said to Screen Rant in December of last year: ‘Judy Craymer, the brilliant producer of the musical and the first two films, always planned for it to be a trilogy’
‘That’s all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn’t it be lovely?’
With Abba having released a new album Voyage in 2021 since the second films production it means that there’s a whole tracklist of new songs they could use for the third film. Although Meryl Streep’s character has passed away in the second film it will be interesting to see how they can work her back into the film and the concept the writers have making her center stage once more.

It would be great to return to the magical Kalokairi and see our favourite characters dancing to the incredible soundtrack of Abba….but we will just have to see what happens next. Until then you bet we will be replaying films one and two on repeat!
