Since the creation of Barbie 64 years ago, she has contributed to changing the rules for women!
And now the popular Barbie movie has broken another record! Warner Brothers has announced that Barbie has overtaken it’s biggest ever selling film and broken the record previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 earning a staggering $1.3 billion dollars!
Making $1 billion in revenue in just 17 days the movie also made Greta Gerwig the first woman to have the sole director credit on a movie with a $1 billion budget – the doll has assisted a real woman in reaching an industry milestone.
MATTEL RELEASED NEW ‘WEIRD BARBIE’ FROM THE BARBIE MOVIE
According to Jeff Goldstein, the studio’s head of domestic distribution, Barbie achieved $1 billion more quickly than any other Warner Bros. film, topping Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) by two days.
‘As distribution chiefs, we’re not often rendered speechless by a film’s performance, but Barbillion has blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water,” said Goldstein and Andrew Cripps the WB president of international distribution at Warner Bros.
Additionally, Gerwig’s movie is one of the few $1 billion films with female leads.
A large pink marketing effort and the film’s simultaneous release with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which gave rise to the “Barbenheimer” cultural phenomena, contributed to its early popularity. But since its release, the Barbie movie’s self-aware societal criticism has won over viewers and reviewers alike.
BARBIE MOVIE BANNED
The Times quotes Ana-Christina Ramón, co-author of UC Los Angeles’ yearly surveys on diversity in Hollywood hiring, as saying that the underappreciation of female-centric films is made worse by the paucity of women in executive positions at Hollywood studios.
She continues, “If ever there was an example of why Hollywood needs more women in positions of power, this was it.
The film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken has been a cultural moment in 2023 and has people asking if there will be a sequel to the movie! The film has created tie in products with a range of brands and film fans can now even by a ‘Weird Barbie‘ based on Kate McKinnon’s character from the movie.

After succeeding in topping $1.3 billion dollars it’s clear to see that Barbie has a huge worldwide audiences and that it could be only the beginning of another franchise by WB!
It’s now even domestically beaten the record previously held by Avengers: End Game at the box office…and it is still continuing to make money!
We hope there’s a new adventure in Barbieland in the future but until then we will continue to be obsessed with this movie!
