Is Barbie going to be getting a sequel?

It’s been the film of the year and definitely the film of the summer on course to make over making $1 Billion dollars. The film has been seen in advertisements, movie premieres, the music charts, product partnerships and of course the box office and it’s all anyone is talking about. So is Barbie getting a sequel?
The film starring stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken were joined by a host of acting talents including Will Ferrell, America Ferrera and Helen Mirren for what has become a worldwide success. Although the film seemingly had a finished ending it’s got audiences asking what’s next for the global doll and her friends?
Well it’s thought a sequel is most definitely on the way!
Looking at the other huge successes that Warner Brothers have had in recent years with films such as ‘The Batman’, the Barbie has far surpassed the gross of the movie and has broken records not just for the company but records in the global movie market.

In its first five days, Gerwig’s Barbie brought in over $200 million (£156 million) at the US box office, surpassing the previous record for the largest opening weekend by a female director.
It would seem silly for Mattel and Warner Brothers not to capitalise on this. Barbie 2 has even been mentioned by Mattel’s CEO, Ynon Kreiz. While it is still early, Kreiz stated that the success “would invite more opportunities” and that “we expect the brand to continue to grow, we expect to have more opportunities in content.” Although it’s not formally guaranteed, it’s close enough.
Gerwig will be quite busy as it was just confirmed that she would write and direct two films set in the Chronicles of Narnia world for Netflix.
But it doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be involved in the production or that they wouldn’t hold off on filming a sequel until she was available. Her vision has helped make the Barbie film a success along with the brilliant production and crew of the film!

But would it even need to be a Barbie film? For his part, Gosling stated to Entertainment Tonight earlier this month that he would be open to working again with Gerwig and Robbie “on anything,” even a Ken-focused sequel or a completely other movie!

And plenty of stars have shown interest in being a Ken in any future films including Oppenheimer main man himself Cillian Murphy who said in an interview ‘Would I play a Ken in Barbie 2? Sure, yeah,’ Murphy said to Brazilian entertainment website Omelete. ‘Let’s read the script, let’s have a conversation.’

While it’s not been officially announced it seems silly with the Barbie film having such a big box office success that a sequel wouldn’t happen when they have been made for far less!
The film put a spin on a popular franchise and added a heartfelt message and between Gerwig, Robbie and Gosling and co created a hollywood blockbuster that is set to continue to be talked about for years to come!
