It appears that Hollywood is planning to revive yet another superhero series.
While it might seem commonplace now to have both superhero shows and films featuring heroes who are models of virtue and upright citizens, as well as franchises highlighting the “dark” side of super heroism, this was less common in 2010.
The Kick-Asss films, which debuted in March 2010 and were based on the same-named 2008 comics, saw future Hollywood stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz take on the roles of Kick-Ass and Hit Girl, respectively.
The movie, which had foul language, blood, and gore in addition to a comic tone, managed to find some success at the box office, making an estimated $96 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.
After the first of the two controversial films was released more than ten years ago, director Matthew Vaughn talked at New York Comic Con and revealed the franchise’s future ambitions.
“Kick-Ass changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is. We’re doing it again” Vaughn said while on a panel at the convention on Saturday.
“None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we’d like to have them back after the reboot. I can’t really talk about it, but it’s fun.”
Although Vaughn appeared enthusiastic about the remake, it may be challenging for him to take the helm due to his demanding schedule.
Also unknown is if he will participate in screenplay, like he did for the first movie.
Vaughn discussed his commitment to the Kingsman franchise as well as his other film intentions when speaking at Comic Con.
“We’ve got to get on with Kingsman 3 because I was joking that Colin [Firth] is going to end up being a portrait on the side while Taron [Egerton] is Arthur. So we are working on that at the moment,” Vaughn said
In addition, Vaughn stated that he is now working on a musical project, which will probably take precedence over the production of both Kingsman and Kick-Ass.
“I’m actually going to be doing a musical next year, can’t talk about it,” he said of the unnamed project.
“And it’s taking me so long to find a musical to do because a musical is only as good as the music, and Elton John’s catalogue is pretty hard to beat, so I’m trying to match it, at least, and I think we’ve nearly got there… it’s bats**t crazy, but it’s fun.”
