Fancy planning a last-minute winter getaway? Well, you might be tempted to tour the continent after seeing these magical Christmas markets found throughout Europe…
Strasbourg, France
Looking like an actual toytown, Strasbourg in France is the ideal destination to get into the Christmas spirit. The area’s annual Christmas market, named Christkindelsmärik, may not be one you’ve heard of before, but it’s certainly one you should check out! Officially France’s oldest Christmas market, Christkindelsmärik’s is about as ornate as it gets, and certainly proves why it has stood the test of time by earning Strasbourg its nickname as the “capital of Christmas”.
Basel, Switzerland
Located alongside a historic Cathedral, the Basel Christmas market couldn’t get more traditional. If you’re looking for something rustic, and want to be surrounded by wooden stalls and pine trees, then Switzerland is the place for you. Step into the picturesque town square of Münsterplatz, and simply feel engulfed in the Christmas spirit.
Dresden, Germany
When you think of Christmas trees, you probably think of Germany. But how about Christmas lights? Head to Dresden to see this beautifully-decorated Christmas market, which truly brings the holiday season to life. It’s no wonder that millions of people visit Dresden’s Christmas market every year, as it even makes fairground rides look tasteful!
Vienna, Austria
Surrounded by stunning architecture, it’s no wonder that Vienna’s Christmas market is a spectacle to be admired. With stalls centred around a huge pine tree, Austria’s capital becomes unapologetically festive during the winter season, and we’re living for it. The area is credited as being family-friendly, and indescribably romantic, so there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
Tallinn, Estonia
If you prefer somewhere a little more lowkey, and less jam-packed, it may be worth considering a trip to Tallinn in Estonia to visit their Christmas market. A breath of fresh air, Tallinn’s market looks decidedly scenic and calm, but still obviously jolly enough to get you in the Christmas mood! Snow is also likely to be found in Estonia, so you could even catch yourself a glimpse of a white Christmas.
Madeira, Portugal
Since the reins of Covid loosened, some of us are probably feeling the urge to go for something completely out of the box. In that case, you have the ideal opportunity to take a trip to a sunnier part of the world and experience a Christmas market in the sun. The Portuguese region of Madeira lets you have the best of both worlds, soaking up the mild weather and exotic wildlife, whilst taking part in the season’s festivities. Here, you’re guaranteed a Christmas experience like no other – one where you won’t need your hats and scarves for comfort!
