After being the filming location of six blockbuster films and the Amazon prime series ‘The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime’ New Zealand’s reputation as the real-life Middle-earth endures and YOU can visit! After being used for the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit the original sets remain for visitors to see an explore and they look beautiful.
Visitors may stop at Bag End, stroll through hobbit-sized vegetable fields, and celebrate Bilbo’s 111th birthday at the Green Dragon Inn with a Southfarthing beer and a dance (if you want!)
Dedicated movie enthusiasts might also visit Wellington’s Wt Workshop, where you can learn about the props, costuming, and some of the many practical effects used in the series. You can even enjoy hands-on workshops in sculpting, leatherwork, or horrific makeup…it’s certainly a day out!

Your guided tour starts with a drive through our picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges.
Take a look at Bag End, where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began. Get lost among the hobbit holes and visit the Green Dragon Inn, the mill and the Party Tree. Listen to spell-binding tales of how Hobbiton came to be.

You can DINE like a Hobbit!
The new ‘Second Breakfast’ tour, which includes a guided stroll across the 12-acre film set followed by a rustic breakfast feast at the Millhouse, allows you to be among the first to explore Hobbiton in the morning. Starting at NZ$149 (£78).
Mirkwood Rafting
Bilbo and his dwarf companions avoided elves and orcs by floating down the river in barrels. Recreate their daring ‘barrel run’ with Pelorus Eco Adventures on a kayaking expedition along the Pelorus River, paddling through the stunning valley that inspired Mirkwood. Starting at NZ$185 (£97).
Ride across the country
Saddle your magnificent steed and go on a family-friendly horse excursion through Glenorchy’s glacier valleys. Half-day rides through the Wizard’s Vale are available through Lighthorse Adventures, including vistas of the Misty Mountains and the powerful Methedras. Feel like a genuine Rohan rider by personalising your experience with horseback archery instruction. Starting at NZ$209 (£110).
