Even though the Simpsons have been on our screens for more than three decades and are undoubtedly the most recognisable family in television, it seems strange that Matt Groening chose to make them bright yellow.
It turns out that the decision to make the Simpsons yellow was made for a reason, and it may have had a variety of advantages.

The plan to colour them yellow really originated from an animator, according to Groening. The creator of The Simpsons stated that he wanted his show to be striking. He wanted The Simpsons’ bright yellow colouring to stand out while someone was changing stations and entice them to come back and watch it. The recognisable yellow Simpsons family was thus produced.
He told CBBC ‘An animator came up with the Simpsons’ yellow and as soon as she showed it to me I said, ‘This is the answer!’ When you’re flicking through channels with your remote control, and a flash of yellow goes by, you’ll know you’re watching The Simpsons‘
That wasn’t the only reason behind the yellow choice though.
In his book, show writer Mike Reiss shared a lot of the show’s secrets and according to him, the decision to make the family yellow was also to do with hair lines.
Mike said ‘Bart, Lisa, and Maggie don’t have hairlines; a line doesn’t exist between their skin and their hair tips, he claimed. The animators decided on yellow because it resembles both skin and hair’

Furthermore, given that yellow is the hue that is most apparent to the human eye owing to how our eyes process light, there appears to be some scientific reasoning and advantage to the colour choice!
