The eagerly anticipated third instalment of the Princess Diaries series is now in production at Disney, but lead actress Anne Hathaway hasn’t committed to playing Mia Thermopolis again just yet.
The third movie in the Princess Diaries trilogy is currently being written by Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji, 18 years after the series’ final instalment, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement from 2004.
This movie, which is a continuation of the films and not a reboot, will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who also produced the original two movies.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Oscar winner Anne, 40, expressed her support for a third entry in the series.
‘I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,’ she said emphatically. ‘If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.’
The 87-year-old actress revealed earlier this year that the moment for a third film starring her has passed, despite Anne’s wish to collaborate with The Sound of Music actor.
‘I think it would be too late to do it now,’ she told THR back in June. ‘There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass.’
‘[For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it,’ she said. ‘It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.’
The Princess Diaries, a 2001 film starring Anne Hathaway about an American teen who discovers she is a Princess of the imaginary Genovia, following Mia Thermopolis. Andrews portrayed Clarisse Renaldi, the monarch of the realm.
In The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Anne Hathaway’s character fought off an arranged marriage while managing her duties as a princess.
