Here is what we know about Sister Act 3

Whoopi Goldberg is picking up her Sister Act habit. Sister Act 3 could be in the works, thirty years after the 1992 original and the subsequent Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. With Tyler Perry producing and Goldberg reprising her role as lounge singer turned singing nun Deloris Van Trier, the film was first revealed as a Disney+ release in 2020.
Since then, Goldberg has occasionally provided updates on the movie through her work at The View. Perry gave a status update in September while making a guest appearance. “I love the idea of us making this happen, but you know the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to,” he said. Goldberg said that it had “taken 20 years” to get a sequel off the ground, adding, “They were sort of lukewarm for the longest time [about making the movie], they said nobody wanted to see it and then Tyler went in and said, ‘I want to see it.’ Next thing I knew, we were on. That’s the power of TP.”
In October, she said that the release of Sister Act 3 was made possible by the popularity of Hocus Pocus 2, a ’90s favourite that received a long-awaited Disney+ sequel. The movie “is happening,” according to Goldberg, who also revealed that they would “get a script at the end of the month” while speaking to guest and franchise co-star Kathy Najimy. She added, “They finally said, ‘We might as well put those nuns back out there and see if they have any juice.”
Who is in Sister Act 3?
According to Deadline in 2021, Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) has been chosen to helm the movie with a story by Madhuri Shekar (The Nevers). Which sisters will be paired with Goldberg is still a mystery. Jenifer Lewis recently indicated she was “so ready” to return to the franchise, and Keke Palmer publicly requested a part in the movie while appearing on the show in November 2021. In a Hell of a Week segment with Charlamagne Tha God, Goldberg expressed her desire for Palmer to enter the convent. She continued by mentioning Nicki Minaj and Lizzo as people she would love to see in the movie as musically talented nuns.
More recently, Goldberg pushed for Jimmy Fallon, presenter of The Tonight Show, to make a cameo appearance on his programme. “The script came in yesterday,” she said to the host. “I really like it but it has a whole lot of adults to go through. So, if they don’t get in its way, it could actually be pretty good.” Fallon was then asked by Goldberg if he would stop by for “a day” to film a few scenes. “Yes! Are you kidding me? To be in Sister Act 3?” he replied. “Of course, I would do that, I would do anything for you.”
The likelihood that Dame Maggie Smith, who portrayed the stern Mother Superior in the first two films, will return for a third movie is less certain. But Goldberg won’t give up trying to make it happen despite that. Goldberg persuaded the additional Oscar winner to resume the practise during a guest appearance on the British discussion show Loose Women. “One of the things that I want to make sure I do while I’m here is I want to let Maggie Smith know that I’m holding the part of Mother Superior for you,” she said to the camera. “Because I just can’t do it with anybody but you.”
Goldberg then promised that if Smith wasn’t able to relocate for filming, the production would go to her. “So if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we have to do, we will do whatever you want us to do,” she continued. “Because we don’t want to do it without you, Maggie.”
When is Sister Act 3 coming out?
The movie’s IMDB website lists it as Sister Act 3: Kicking the Habit and includes a fan-made poster with Goldberg, Palmer, and—interestingly enough—Bette Midler (who was initially envisioned for the character of Deloris) listed as the stars. The official release date and title, however, remain hidden. Palmer subsequently tweeted the poster, writing, “God bless y’all for this manifestation over my life. @WaltDisneyCo, this is what they asked for I’m just here to relay.”
