Disney has been on a roll with live-action remakes of their classic animated movies. But this time, they’re doing something different. They’re bringing the 2016 hit animated movie, Moana, to the big screen once again, but this time in live-action format!
CEO Bob Iger originally broke the news to shareholders, but it was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who shared the news with audiences. It’s still early days for the project, but we do know that Johnson will be back as the voice of Maui, the demigod who helped Moana save her people.
Johnson is thrilled to be a part of this project, saying in a statement, “I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen. This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”
Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced the title character in the animated movie, will be producing the live-action version behind the scenes, while original co-director Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller will also be involved. The details are still being kept under wraps, but we can only hope that the new movie will be just as magical as the original.

It’s exciting to see Disney taking risks with a live-action remake of a more recent movie. Usually, the studio waits several decades before attempting a live-action adaptation. But with the success of the animated Moana, it’s no surprise that Disney wants to bring the story to life once again.
Fans of the original movie will be looking forward to seeing their favorite characters in live-action, but there’s always a risk that the new version won’t live up to the original. However, with Johnson’s passion for the project and the involvement of the original co-director, there’s hope that the live-action Moana will be a hit.
