While most actors strive to hit the Hollywood film industry and never stop, Chris Evans made a surprising decision. He walked away from the multi-million dollar deal that made him synonymous with Marvel’s iconic Captain America.
Now, in a candid interview featured in GQ Magazine’s October issue, the 42-year-old actor delves into the reasons behind his superhero exit and hints at a possible retirement from the industry.
Evans’ journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) catapulted him to superstardom, making him one of the highest-paid actors in the business. But after bidding adieu to his superhero alter ego following “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, he’s had time to reflect on his monumental decision.
The actor confesses, “I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?”

As his fame skyrocketed, so did his anxiety, at times becoming overwhelming. To regain a sense of self, he made a pivotal move, leaving the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and returning to his roots near Boston, Massachusetts.
Evans reflects on this shift, saying, “[It] takes me back to a place when life was not just simpler – that’s too reductive – but to a time where I was more pure, I guess; where my ego and my insecurities weren’t such a dominant force that I had to push against.”
Severe anxiety nearly led Evans to quit acting, exacerbated by the colossal magnitude of the Marvel franchise. When asked about a potential return to the MCU, he replies, “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing.”

The weight of worldwide fame has left Evans contemplating whether he wishes to continue his acting career.
He shares, “I could just make furniture for nobody and be happy. I don’t want to waste too much time in this industry, but that doesn’t really feel…. That doesn’t sound correct. I don’t want to occupy too much space in an industry that I’ve already poured 20 years into. Sometimes I wonder if I’m lacking some sort of—like, I think I’m a very driven person. I have a lot of energy. I wake up early, I get a lot done in a day, but it’s not always focused on acting. Sometimes reading a script is the last thing I want to do.”
In the midst of these ponderings, Chris Evans embarked on another exciting chapter of his life, marrying actress Alba Baptista, 26. Their wedding was a closely guarded affair, with attendees asked to sign NDAs and surrender their phones, keeping the details shrouded in secrecy. Marvel co-stars, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner, were among the star-studded guest list.
