According to Variety, NBC News will air a documentary about TikTok’s influence on the defamation case titled A Marriage on Trial: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, and Truth in the Age of Social Media.
Its synopsis reads: “The Depp v Heard defamation trial evoked two distinct reactions – those who couldn’t get enough and those who received more than they wanted.
“The new deep-dive documentary explores why the trial overwhelmed social media, specifically TikTok, and what viewers missed if social media coverage was their only news source.
“In the wake of a verdict that surprised legal experts, NBC News examines how the trial evolved into the TikTok trial and what the verdict means for future domestic abuse cases.”
It’s anticipated that the 30-minute show would have an interview with Heard’s attorney, Elaine Bredehoft, as well as other guests.
But it doesn’t seem like the actress or her ex-husband showed up.
Heard’s op-ed post for The Washington Post back in 2018 served as the catalyst for the entire case. “I came out against sexual violence – and suffered our culture’s wrath,” it said. That needs to alter.
The jury found in favour of Depp after the high-profile trial in June, and the Aquaman actor was ordered to pay the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive penalties.
Judge Penney Azcarate ultimately reduced this amount to only $10.35 million due to Virginia’s $350,000 restriction.
A Marriage on Trial: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard and Truth in the Age of Social Media will debut on ET at 10:30pm on Wednesday. It will also be available on demand from NBCNews.com and Peacock.
