Utahs Beautiful Blue Canal That Is Deemed Unsafe

Influencers have been warned to stay away from a Utah drainage ditch that has turned into a weird hotspot for people attempting to partake in photoshoots for their Insta followers.

We’re all for exploring hidden, unusual, and off-the-beaten-path destinations (in fact, avoiding touristy destinations is vital to traveling more authentically). But it’s also important to be respectful of locals.

The problem is that the canals are not natural at all: they are designed for industrial purposes, as local company Intrepid Potash uses the canals (and nearby ponds) to extract minerals from the brines.

The federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) agency warns potential adventurers that the waters may “be unsafe for boating and swimming”. The BLM’s manager says the canals “are not appropriate for recreation due to the canals’ industrial design and other unknown hazards.”

The water isn’t poisonous, but it’s not suitable for swimming. Near the canals and the surrounding steep berm sections, there may also be unstable/sinking terrain.

Not only that, but there’s more. While the blue canals are partially on public ground, they also cross private property, and there are numerous “no trespassing” signs.

Not to mention the fact that there are no access roads, forcing visitors to park on the side of a major Interstate Highway, which is also prohibited. Unfortunately, those on that section of road are in risk. Especially when many people appear to be walking over the highway to get to the canals.

Because of the recent influx of visitors, the Utah Highway Patrol has been monitoring the area and issuing tickets.

So, how do you feel about breaking the rules in order to access a gorgeous location? Or not following the advice of the locals? Do you believe it is worthwhile? Would you go through with it? Ultimately, it’s up to you, but do your research first. Things aren’t always as they same on a glossy photo or viral video…

This may not be the ideal spot for exploring, but this adventurous getaway definitely is!
