Aoshima Island is one of around a dozen “cat islands” scattered throughout Japan, small islands with far more cats than people. Over a hundred cats roam Aoshima, snuggling up in abandoned buildings or strutting around the peaceful fishing community. On the island, cats outnumber people six to one. The tiny island of Aoshima has seen a sharp increase in tourist visits since becoming popular online, overwhelming the few permanent residents.
Aoshima was originally a thriving fishing island, but there are now only a few human people left. The cat population, on the other hand, is booming. They were originally introduced to aid fishermen by controlling the mouse population, but they have now become YouTube sensations and the island’s main attraction.
There are no hotels, restaurants, stores, or even vending machines on Aoshima, which is not built for tourists. Visitors should bring their own food and drink, as well as all of their trash.
The cats of Aoshima, despite being semi-feral, are accustomed to human visitors. It’s not uncommon to see a mob of tourists wanting to befriend the kittens, thanks to the recent surge in publicity. Fortunately, with over 100 felines on the island, you won’t have to fight for their favour too hard!
In exchange for food and your full attention, these fluffballs will happily play with you and allow you take photos. If you want to feed the cats, please do so only at the approved feeding place near the island’s community centre, which is only a few minutes’ walk from the dock.
Aoshima is a peaceful island in Ehime Prefecture that is only one mile long and known as “Cat Island.” It’s a must-see for all cat enthusiasts, with feline occupants outnumbering human ones by nearly eight to one!
