One actor revealed this week that she has separated from her husband after what seemed like a continual stream of celebrity divorces over the past year.
Jada Pinkett-Smith revealed she and Will Smith have been quietly apart since 2016 even though their separation is not legally recognised as a divorce.
She told People: “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”
Therefore, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the Men in Black actor wasn’t actually “with” his “wife” when he smacked Chris Rock in the face.
Let’s review what happened.
Will provided us with memes and amazement when he entered the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.
The comedian’s “joke” that Jada, who sports a shaved head, resembled “G.I. Jane,” infuriated the actor.
Many viewers initially believed the slap was excessive even though she had just recently revealed that she had alopecia.
But as Will sat back down afterwards, he yelled to the host: “Keep my wife’s name out your f**king mouth,” although I don’t think many of us have forgotten that.
Given that they had been apart for six years at that point, Jada has later said that she was astonished by what was taking place and at first assumed “this is a skit.”
She stated to People: “I was thinking, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him. I didn’t even realise it wasn’t a skit until Will started to return to his chair.
When they were alone again, Jada claimed she asked him, “Are you okay?” initially.
She discussed the well-known incident in detail during her appearance with Hoda Kotb on the Today show.
The Red Table Talk host said: “First of all, I’m really shocked because, mind you, I’m not there – we haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time. I’m like, what is going on right now?”
She added that in the moment she was ‘really worried for Will’ because ‘I don’t know what’s going on’.
Jada also revealed that Chris leant over the stage afterwards and told her: “Jada, I meant you no harm.”

Jada opened up about her first encounter with Will in Hollywood, sharing the story of their initial interaction. After Will split from his first wife, Sheree Zampino, he called Jada and inquired, “Who are you going out with?” Upon learning she was single, he boldly declared, “Well, you’re going out with me now.” Jada, reflecting on that moment, said, “Can you believe I fell for that? Will called me up one day and said, ‘Hit me when you get to L.A.,’ and then… click. And I was like, ‘Whoa. Okay.’ And so when I got to L.A., I called him. I haven’t been able to get rid of him since.”
Regarding their relationship’s current status, Jada shared, “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just have deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.” Jada also expressed the support of her children, Jaden and Willow, as well as Trey, whom Will shares with Zampino. She highlighted the deep sense of self-acceptance her children have taught her and the unconditional love they have for both her and their dad.
Even though they’ve been separated for years, Jada made it clear that she will “never divorce” Will. She explained in an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show that they faced challenges in their marriage, leading to their separation in 2016. However, despite considering divorce, Jada was determined to never break the promise she made to Will that there would never be a reason for them to divorce. She stated firmly, “We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

The actor told Kotb about the separation: “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
And by the time the Oscars slap came around, Jada and Will were living ‘completely separate lives’.

Jaden receives his name from his mother’s name Jada, and Willow from her father’s name Will.

Jaden Smith is a rapper and actor whose career took off after he appeared in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) with his father Will.
