Wonder Woman 3: DCEU Acknowledge Diana’s Bisexuality

In 2016, DC Comics acknowledged Diana’s bisexuality, yet the DCEU’s lack of queer representation continues to be a barrier for LGBTQ+ people.

The DCEU’s tendency of suppressing Diana Prince’s bisexuality can no longer be continued, with Wonder Woman 3 presently in pre-production. Wonder Woman, also known as Diana Prince, was revealed to be bisexual by DC Comics in 2016, one year before the release of the first Wonder Woman film. Wonder Woman’s first sapphic connection was introduced in Wonder Woman Vol 5 #2, a year before Wonder Woman was released. Despite having numerous opportunities to explore the Amazonian princess’ sexuality, the DCEU has failed to offer Diana with gay representation that is explicit in the comics.

Diana’s bisexuality has not been depicted in Wonder Woman, Justice League, or Wonder Woman 1984. Not only has Diana had love relationships with Althea, Mala, and Kasia in the comics, but she has also been reported to have clear romantic chemistry with Cheetah/Barbara Minerva and Batwoman. Wonder Woman 3 has the ability to depict this facet of Diana’s sexuality, which has been centred on Steve Trevor up until now. Diana’s bisexuality might be explored by introducing one of the many female characters from DC Comics who could play her new lover. It’s an insult that it hasn’t even been acknowledged at this point.

The DCEU can’t keep ignoring Wonder Woman’s sexuality because it’s such an important aspect of her character. Queer representation in films is critical because it allows LGBTQ+ members of the audience to connect with characters that share their sexuality and gender identity. The LGBTQ+ community and Wonder Woman audiences that identify as bisexual are being marginalised by Warner Bros.’ unwillingness to represent Diana’s bisexuality and its exclusive focus on Wonder Woman with Steve Trevor. Everyone wants and deserves to see themselves represented on screen, which is why there is such a tremendous demand for LGBTQ+ inclusion in movies. For many LGBT people who look up to these heroes, it can also provide them a sense of belonging. And if Wonder Woman stands for anything, it’s for compassion and love of all kinds.

Wonder Woman 1984

In Wonder Woman 3, a potential bisexual love interest for Diana has already been established. Barbara Minerva, Diana’s friend-turned-foe, was played by Kristen Wiig in Wonder Woman 1984. While the return of Barbara in Wonder Woman 3 has yet to be announced, many fans are hoping that Wiig’s character may pursue a love relationship with Diana in the third chapter. Not only would their attraction be legit in the comics, but it would also help flesh out Cheetah’s character, who was underdeveloped in Wonder Woman 1984 due to Kristen Wiig’s underuse.

Gal Gadot and Wiig herself have engaged with the possibility of Diana and Barbara being more than just friends. In a 2020 interview, both actors were asked if the lunch scene in Wonder Woman 1984 between Diana and Barbara was a date. Wiig asked “Oh, for a lesbian thing?”and Gadot then remarked, “The sexual tension is always there, I can tell you that!” (via SFX Magazine)
