His family has revealed that broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson passed away at the age of 88.
He spent seven decades on television interviewing the top stars in the world for his long-running chat show where he gained the nickname ‘Parky’.
According to a statement from Sir Michael’s family, “Sir Michael Parkinson died away quietly at home yesterday night in the presence of his family after a brief illness.

The first guest on Sir Michael Parkinson’s 1971 BBC television debut of the Parkinson programme was the American jazz vocalist Marion Montgomery.

In the first 11 years of the show’s existence, Sir Michael coupled his affable demeanour with a background in journalism in hundreds of episodes before returning once against in 1998.
In the span of his show Parky was said to have spoken to over 2,000 unique guests including Muhammad Ali, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Elton John, Madonna, Tom Cruise and Meg Ryan. He also had a cameo in the popular Christmas movie ‘Love Actually’ where he interviews the singer Billy Mack played by Bill Nighy.
In 2000, he received a CBE, and in 2008, he was knighted for his work. His achievements in journalism and entertainment is held in such high regard and he will forever be a legend among broadcasters.
